Hi there!

I am an art historian and museum educator from Córdoba, Spain. I have been writing and creating content in Spanish for years, and recently decided to try and do it in English as well. I chose Substack for this reason, and I am loving it so far.

I am interested in all kinds of art from every time and every place, but a few years ago I specialized in the study of color, and then I went more niche still and focussed on prehistory, pigments and cognition. I am going through the process of applying for funded PhD positions (which are incredibly scarce in the humanities) to start my doctorate. If you are getting a PhD/trying to start one, please get in touch! I would love to share experiences.

What you´ll find in Pigments, colors & other stories

I am interested in too many things, and I love interdisciplinary research and knowledge, so you might find different topics in my newsletter, but I try to focus on themes connected to color.

I love everything related to art, language, aesthetics and rituals (what is called symbolic thinking in the study of human evolution), and I am totally into material culture and archeology at the moment. My posts follow my own curiosity and respond to the things I wonder about. Now and then, you´ll find some passionate defense of the humanities, because I think they are crucial in research and education (and a healthy society).

Besides the more historical aspect of pigments and dyes that make up the original newsletter, I have added a section called Chromatic Rebel that you can find at the top of the main page. This section is about modern and contemporary aesthetics. It was inspired by the ever-present presence of beige and neutral colors in current fashion and design, and it aims to be an act of resistance to aesthetic conformity, and a yes to colors and individual expression.

How often you´ll receive a newsletter

I can´t promised to be super regular with the dates of posting, but I try to post on Mondays every two weeks. I share smaller updates every now and then on Notes when I have some interesting piece of knowledge to show you, or when I find something that inspires me. Subscribe below to receive the newsletter and get in touch if you feel like it!
